Microsoft Project Server and Professional Features
Q. What is Microsoft
Project Server 2003?
A. Microsoft Project Server 2003 is a new
.NET Enterprise Server that provides the platform for workgroup
collaboration and enterprise project management when used
with Microsoft Project. Microsoft Project Server provides
a centralized repository for project and resource information
so organizations of any size can collaborate and share project
information, centrally manage and optimize resources, standardize
project reporting, and conduct portfolio modeling and analysis.
[top]
Q. What is Microsoft
Project Web Access?
A. Microsoft Project Web Access is a feature
of Microsoft Project Server. It is the Web browser-based interface
that enables project team members and stakeholders to access
and update information stored in Microsoft Project Server
— without the need to install Microsoft Project on their
computers. Using Microsoft Project Web Access requires a Microsoft
Project Server Client Access License.
[top]
Q. What is SharePoint Team Services?
A. SharePoint™ Team Services from Microsoft
is a Web site solution included with Microsoft Project Server
2003 that improves the way project teams share information.
SharePoint Team Services works seamlessly with Microsoft Project
Server 2003 so project teams can centrally store and organize
project-related documents and issues through Microsoft Project
Web Access, the Microsoft Project Server Web interface.
[top]
Q. What is enterprise project management?
A. Enterprise project management enables
companies of any size to standardize project management practices
across workgroups or across the entire organization. Microsoft
Project Professional and Microsoft Project Server 2003 —
along with Microsoft Project Server Client Access Licenses
— provides an enterprise project management solution.
This solution:
• Enables centralized management and optimization of
resources, standardized project reporting, and portfolio modeling
and analysis — through Microsoft Project Server.
• Supports an organization’s need for heightened
security, performance levels, and the ability to integrate
with other line–of-business systems.
• Provides workgroup collaboration features through
Microsoft Project Web Access, including timesheets, status
reports, and the ability to centrally store and organize project-related
documents and issues.

Q. How does Microsoft
Project work with Microsoft Project Server?
A. Microsoft Project Professional provides
tools to create project plans and publish project information
to Microsoft Project Server. In conjunction with Microsoft
Project Server 2003 and Microsoft Project Server Client Access
Licenses, Microsoft Project Professional provides an enterprise
project management solution. This comprehensive solution helps
organizations:
• Centrally manage resources and projects
• Standardize reporting
• Collaborate and share project information
• Perform modeling and scenario analysis
• Integrate with their current business processes and
systems through an extensible technology platform
Microsoft Project Server can also be used with Microsoft Project
Standard. This combination of products is essentially the
successor to Microsoft Project 2000 and Microsoft Project
Central Server. It includes the functionality of Microsoft
Project Central, such as timesheets and status reports, and
supports the central storage of documents and issues with
the integration of SharePoint Team Services. However, it does
not include enterprise project or resource management features.
While Microsoft Project Standard can be used with Microsoft
Project Server, deploying Microsoft Project Professional and
Microsoft Project Server will position your company to grow
into enterprise project management smoothly, as your project
management requirements become more sophisticated.

Q. What is a Microsoft Project Server
Client Access License (CAL)?
A. It is a license to use the services or
functionality of Microsoft Project Server. It is not a software
product. Team members and stakeholders using Microsoft Project
Web Access must have a Microsoft Project Server Client Access
License.

Connecting to EPM Solutions Terminal Server
Q. What is a Terminal
Server?
A. Terminal Server lets you deliver Windows-based
applications or the Windows desktop itself to virtually any
computing device — including those that cannot run Windows.
For example, a user can access a virtual Windows XP Professional
desktop along with x86-based Windows applications from hardware
that cannot run the software locally.
When a user runs an application on a Windows 2000-based terminal
server, all of the application execution takes place on the
server and only the keyboard, mouse and display information
are transmitted over the network. Each user sees only their
individual session, which is managed transparently by the
server operating system and is independent of any other client
session.
A terminal services session allows you to run the IE browser
& MS Project Professional on a server located on the EPM Solutions
hosting network. This provides the user higher security and
better response time.

Q. Why do I need to connect
to EPM Solutions Terminal Server and what is it’s FQDN?
A. If you do not have Project Professional
2003 installed in your local machine, we provide the Terminal
Server as a solution. Once you login to EPM Solutions Terminal Server,
you have the ability to use the Project Professional in the
server and connect to Project Server.
EPM Solutions Terminal Server’s FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name)
is ts.mspshosting.com.
[top]
Q. How do
I connect to Terminal Server?
A. If you are a Windows XP user, the Remote
Connection Client is already built-in. Select Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications>Remote
Desktop Connection and use ‘ts.mspshosting.com’
in the computer column to connect to our Terminal Server.
If you are not a Windows XP use, you need to download and
install the Remote Desktop Connection program. To download,
click: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/rdclientdl.asp.

Q. What
are some of the MS Project Professional Enterprise Features?
A. Microsoft Project Professional introduces
a number of enterprise features, all of which depend on the
Microsoft Project Professional client connection with a Microsoft
Project Server.
• Setting up separate instances of Microsoft Project
Server within your company allows you to set up separate sets
of enterprise project plans and project resources, possibly
accessed by different people.
• A user can define one or more Microsoft Project Server
accounts for Microsoft Project Professional to access. Each
server account will require an authorized user ID and password.
• As the deployment of Microsoft Project expands within
an organization, project managers may need to connect with
multiple Microsoft Project Servers and to run Project in “Offline”
mode when server connections are unavailable or inconvenient.
• In Offline (My Computer) mode, Project Professional
uses a local copy of the so-called “global template”
that was cached when the last online Project Server session
ended. When multiple server accounts have been configured,
the global template that has been cached depends on which
server was most recently accessed.

Q. How do
I print my Project files on Terminal Server to my local printer?
A. Printer redirection is automatic when
you connect to our Terminal Server.
When you log on to Terminal Services, local printers attached
to LPT, COM, and USB ports that are installed on the your
computer are automatically detected and a local queue is created
on the server. Your local printer settings for the default
printer and some properties (for example, printing on both
sides of the page) are used by the server to handle your print
requests.
When you disconnect or end the session, the printer queue
is deleted and any incomplete or pending print jobs are lost.
Information about the your local printers and settings are
saved on the your computer. On subsequent logons, the printer
queue is created using the information stored on the your
computer.
[top]
Q. How do I download/upload
my Project files in the terminal server?
A. This feather is functional for the administrator
and project manager only. You can use our FTP server (ftp://ftp.mspshosting.com)
to download/upload your files stored in your ‘My Documents’
folder.
